Mystic Ball follows Greg Hamilton, the filmmaker, deep into the culture of chinlone, Myanmar's traditional sport. Hard to define, chinlone is a combination of sport, dance and meditation. It combines the explosiveness of martial arts with the elegance of ballet. It features foot skills that would dazzle any soccer player, and extraordinary acrobatics. The object of the game is to keep a woven rattan ball up in the air using only the feet and knees. The aim is oneness, beauty and flow. Though very much a team sport, there is no opposing team, and no winners or losers in this game.
With single minded devotion, Greg pursues his dream of becoming a real chinlone player. After many years of playing alone, he arrives in Myanmar where at first his awkward attempts are met with laughter. But eventually he becomes the first foreigner to play in the greatest of the many Buddhist festivals that celebrate the game.
In this story of self discovery and struggle, Greg finds a sense of oneness and even family, and the Burmese players who embrace him find an ambassador for their unknown art. Beautifully shot, this intimate film will give you a sense of the mystical, and inspire you to follow your own passion with love. A fascinating and long overdue, non-political look inside the culture of Myanmar, one of the most inaccessible and mysterious countries in the world.
